Great post! The only thing that troubles me about crafting so far is the discovery system... it seems really benign.

It isn't really discovery as much as it is, once you get ingredients for something, you can try them out and make the item.

[...] Under the Pale Tree — Let me craft that for you! “Whenever I play a game, I get addicted to crafting. When I played Rift, I made a lot of money by crafting armor and selling it on the auction house. In Skyrim, my alchemy was level 50 by the time my character was level 10. In Aion, I’ve been playing around with crafting stuff. Basically, I like to pick up everything and see what I can make out of it (I blame this on me being a crafty sort of person in real life).
Definitely!

Also, the other two armor-creating disciplines (Leatherwork and Armorsmith) can create bags/boxes like that as well. Add in the fact that you can switch to another crafting type without losing your progress...yeah, check it out :D

VERY neat. Given that my main will be a necro, I'm definitely giving strong consideration to learning more about the Tailoring crafting skill, and the variety of bags you're describing is simply awesome!

Just saying, I'd love a week-long beta. I just started working full-time and my "weekends" tend to be in the middle of the week.

Speaking of stuff like crafting bags, you can make ones that are 'invisible' (items in it will not show up when you're at a merchant), as well as ones like the packs in GW1, which are speficially for weapons and armor. Pretty neat.

I'm not usually someone who gets into crafting too much in MMOs, but this post had excellent detail and examples which gave me a "feel" for the processes involved, and I may have to experiment with it now.

Although the cosmetic aspects of the GW2 crafting have a certain appeal, there are also practical concerns (such as bags with increased inventory space) which motivate me to learn more. Not sure I'm going to do that during the extremely limited time given in a BWE though... I lost sleep (as did many I'm sure) and played obsessively in a way that is actually physically unhealthy for a person my age (or any age for that matter) and still have SO MUCH of the game that I didn't get to experience... so many professions I want to try out... so many places I want to explore...

Hopefully the BWE will start coming more frequently and/or start lasting for just a little bit longer (perhaps a week instead of a weekend?) I definitely have not lost sight of the fact that these are still very much beta TESTS (I filed 7 to 9 bug reports on everything from graphics anomolies, to traits not working, to skill challenge npcs being perma-dead - 3 of those - and did my level best to communicate with the developer as much as I could in a constructive fashion.) But, it is also an "experience" for me... one which I've waited an awfully long time for with great anticipation. Even in it's current, unfinished state, I could quite happily play this game all day long, every day, and would prefer to do just that over playing ANY other game currently available to me - MMO or otherwise...
